The Water Services Division is now accepting applications for a Water Distribution Operator. The Water Distribution Operator will be responsible for all aspects of running and maintaining the City of Guelph’s Class IV Water Distribution System, reporting their work to the Supervisor- Water Distribution. So, in this role, you’ll be responsible for assisting other distribution operators with the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system in accordance with Water Services’ policies, procedures, and operations, as well as the standards set forth by the OIT and/or Class regulatory certification.
The ideal candidate will work under the direction of the Lead Hands and in tandem with the other operators to accomplish the tasks set out by the Distribution Supervisors, all the while maintaining a focus on compliance and health and safety. Job Duties and Overview:

  • Performs distribution operations in compliance with City and Water Services’ policies, methods, and procedures, as well as the requirements of their current certification.
  • Maintains and repairs all equipment used by the Water Services Division, including installation of new machinery and the servicing of existing machinery.
  • Talk to your Lead Hands and/or your Supervisors about anything that’s on your mind.
  • Provides helpful, courteous responses to calls about water distribution and direction to clients.
  • Assist with the operation of equipment and perform any manual labor that may be assigned.
  • Fill out work orders and other paperwork on a daily basis; keep records of work performed using given tools such computers, phones, tablets, and logs.
  • Maintain allocated equipment in a safe working condition and operate it as directed by the Operations Manual.
  • Responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all employees in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable federal, provincial, and city legislation, policies, and procedures, as well as the Ministry of the Environment’s regulations, and any others.
  • Responsible for completing and updating all daily Distribution system and Health and Safety-related statutory and non-statutory records as required.
  • Assist in the investigation of water quality issues, such as high or low pressure, leaking pipes, or discolored water.
  • Takes part in all distribution initiatives, including training.
  • Maintain the public’s health and safety and the reliability of the water distribution system at all times by responding to water-related emergencies during regular business hours and outside of business hours.
  • Carries out supplementary tasks, such as coverage, as required

Eligibility Criteria/About the Candidate

  • Minimum of two years’ college study in engineering, environmental science, or a closely related operational field; minimum of six to twelve months’ experience working in a water-related environment or maintaining related equipment; minimum of a high school diploma. Candidates with less than the required amount of experience or education may be considered.
  • You need to be able to demonstrate that you have the prerequisite knowledge and experience to pass the Class IV Water Distribution (WD) exam set by the Ministry of Environment,
  • Conservation, and Parks.A familiarity with OSHA and WHMIS is essential.
  • Possessing familiarity with the Highway Traffic Act and driving safely.
  • Able to execute the physical duties of the employment, especially those performed outside of normal business hours (e.g., lifting objects weighing up to 25 kg, working in confined areas, and working in all sorts of weather).
  • A person who works well with others and can do so independently and in a group.
  • Ability to deal with the general public and excellent communication skills are required.
  • Ability to operate mobile tablet PCs and water-related software including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) at an intermediate level.
